In the modern industrial landscape, organizations are under intense pressure to deliver high-quality products while maintaining agility and performance. To meet these demands, maintenance must be viewed not as a “necessary evil” but as a strategic provider of a competitive edge.

A holistic system approach is required, where maintenance is an integrated system with specific objectives, processes, and activities that align with the broader organizational mission. Under this framework, maintenance is viewed as a collection of components working toward common objectives, such as maximizing profit and customer satisfaction. The system operates as an input-output model where inputs like labor, tools, and spare parts are transformed into reliable, well-configured equipment ready for production. A production system’s primary output is finished products, but its secondary output consists of degraded or failed equipment, which serves as the primary input for the maintenance system.

This systemic approach requires maintenance strategic plans that are derived directly from the organization’s overarching goals. Key issues at the strategic level include deciding between maintenance outsourcing and in-house delivery, selecting an organizational structure, and determining the appropriate methodology [8, 9]. Maintenance methodologies often combine several strategies, including corrective (run-to-failure), preventive (time-based or condition-based), and opportunity maintenance.

By adopting this integrated model, managers can optimize resources to minimize plant downtime and increase productivity [5, 6]. Ultimately, the goal is to produce equipment in a state where it can perform its designated function safely and reliably [1, 13]. This ensures that high investments in people and equipment achieve the targeted rates of return [1]. By integrating maintenance with production and service functions, the entire organization becomes more resilient to dynamic economic changes.
